Spied – Volkswagen ID.4 on Detroit roads

We haven’t had a “spy” photo in a while. But this is one that took us by surprise, a brand new Volkswagen ID.4 which was sporting Michigan registered “g” plates which is typically associated with an “in transit repair” title.

Looking into it more, the state essentially allows the G plates to be used for dealers or auctioneers to transit vehicles to their destination.

An auctioneer/in-transit repair plate may be issued to an individual, partnership, corporation, or association, including vehicle dealers, who, in the ordinary course of business, have occasion to legally pick up or deliver a vehicle. The auctioneer/in-transit repair plate may be used to move a vehicle for repair or service, or to pick up or deliver a commercial vehicle being driven to a facility to undergo aftermarket modification. The in-transit repair plate is placed on the vehicle being picked up or delivered.

Watercraft dealers and marinas can use an In-transit Repair plate to:

  • Deliver a watercraft or trailer to a purchaser (the trailer may have a watercraft on it),
  • Transport a watercraft between a body of water and place of storage,
  • Transport watercraft and trailers to and from a boat show or exposition, and
  • Repair, service, or store a watercraft or trailer, or to return a watercraft or trailer to the customer after repair, service or storage.

An auctioneer/in-transit repair plate may also be issued to an individual, partnership, corporation, or association who, in the ordinary course of business, operates an auto auction. The plate may be used to legally pick up or deliver a vehicle offered for sale at the auction. Vehicle brokers who are not auctioneers are not eligible for the auctioneer/in-transit repair plate.

Application Form:  BDVR-124 – The application is processed at a Secretary of State branch office.

Fee:  Each Plate $20.00

For those of you who are not big Volkswagen fans, the ID.4 is its first considerable fully Electric Vehicle (EV) offering. We also recently spotted a sister vehicle the Audi etron, but that was sporting privately registered vanity plate tags. Worth noting both the VW ID.4 and Audi etron when we looked were only available for a reservation. These are not vehicles you can just pick up on a whim at a dealership yet.
